Nichols Canyon NA supports Ballot Measure HH

Nichols Canyon NA supports Ballot Measure HH which funds the Mountains Recreation and Conservation Authority (MRCA) in the eastern Santa Monica Mountains. The MRCA is the only public agency responsible for acquiring, maintaining, and protecting local open space, and wildlife corridors within the Eastern Santa Monica Mountains. Unlike most public agencies, the MRCA does not have dedicated funding to respond to increased risk of wildfires due to warmer temperatures and record hot days.

The upcoming election will have profound implications not only on a national level, but a local level as well. CLAW is proud to support Local Measure HH, and we hope you will join us in voting YES! HH will fund conservation and fire prevention efforts by the Mountains Recreation and Conservation Authority (MRCA) in the eastern Santa Monica Mountains.

MRCA is the foremost conservationist agency in the Santa Monica Mountains, and safeguards the well-being and quality of life for all hillside residents. Funding for organizations like the MRCA is vital if we want to preserve native species and protect our local environment. Funds for measure HH will:

  • Protect and expand wildlife corridors to ensure animals and wildlife can survive

  • Acquire and protect critical open space habitat

  • Protect against wildfires in our hillside communities

  • Improve local fire prevention services, including new year-round brush clearing along Mulholland Drive

  • Provide additional park ranger patrols on high fire risk days

  • Improve fire safety around Mulholland Scenic Overlooks with additional irrigation and green space

  • Protect and improve local water quality in streams and reservoirs

Measure HH on the 2020 ballot ($68 for 10 years) will replace the inadequate HH of 2012 ($24 for 10 years). However, 2020’s new Measure HH provides the opportunity to opt out for those homeowners of low income on whom the additional annual tax imposes a burden.
